BAGSHOT, SURREY

Bagshot is a village that served as an important staging post between London and Southampton. Many of coaching inns can be still be traced. Today it is more famous for the Pennyhill Park Hotel where the England rugby team train and home of Edward, Earl of Wessex. It is also known for the set of geologic beds known as the Bagshot Beds.

Bagshot is on the outer edge of the 'green belt' (an area surrounding London in which development is restricted in order to contain the urban spread), the natural vegetation of the area is heath land (from which the administrative borough of Surrey Heath derives its name). The village is separated from its neighbours by open land, most of it heath. Much of this surrounding land is owned by the Ministry of Defence, and some is Royal Estate.

BAGSHOT ATTRACTIONS

Bagshot Park - There has been a Royal hunting lodge on the site now known as Bagshot Park for many centuries: it was well favoured by the Stuart kings. Later it was used by various officers of the Royal household. Prince Edward is our present Queen's third, and youngest, son.
