BODMIN, CORNWALL

The town of Bodmin lies in the centre of Cornwall, England, along the western edge of Bodmin Moor. St. Petroc founded a priory here in the 6th century; he gave the alternate name to Bodmin which is Petrockstow.

Bodmin is situated on the western edge of Bodmin Moor, the county town of Cornwall for a century and a half, and mentioned in the Domesday Book. Bodmin is a busy market town, whose history goes back as far as the sixth century.

Bodmin is the perfect place to discover more about North Cornwall's turbulent history. It's on display in the town museum where you can trace history from the earliest of times. Over 200 years of Regimental history is on display at the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry Museum.

Bodmin Moor was a landscape which engendered fear and awe, but which has also provided inspiration for writers, poets and sculptors. It has generated folklore and legend, with fact and fiction at times blending into one another as tales were passed down over the generations.

Bodmin Moor provides a haven for lovers of birds and wildlife, and is a delightful place to walk and enjoy the fresh air and stillness that a balmy summer day can bestow. There are other pastimes to be enjoyed; a visit to one of the many artists or craftspeople inspired by this special place, or horse riding, cycling and sailing; but beware! The Moor can spring a surprise; there’s many an unwary walker or rider who has been caught in an unexpected moorland mist or sudden shower. But the weather is generally temperate and frosts are uncommon, although an exceptional sprinkling of snow makes the Moor a whole new backdrop against which to explore the ancient archaeology or geology of this ancient land.
