KINGSTON UPON THAMES, SURREY, GREATER LONDON
Kingston upon Thames, part of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, is an ancient market town where
Saxon kings were crowned, and is now a lively suburb of London.
Kingston is a busy and built-up town, the administrative centre of Surrey and one of South London's major shopping
destinations. Head south out of the capital towards Surrey and the first sight you get of it as you cross the Kingston
by-pass is less than alluring. But at the centre of all the bustle, surrounded by shopping arcades and office blocks, the
core of the original medieval town remains intact, laid out around a triangular market place and framed by a medley of
buildings from the twelfth to the sixteenth century.
Central Kingston is a busy predominantly retail centre, with a small number of commercial offices and civic buildings. It has great many car parks, connected by a notoriously difficult one-way system. It is one of the main centres of the south west London bus network, and it is connected to Twickenham, Richmond upon Thames, Wimbledon, and London Waterloo by overground train.
Kingston has good road (A3) and rail links which provide quick access to London, the south coast and Heathrow and Gatwick
airports. Waterloo can be reached in 35minutes, making Kingston attractive to commuters.
