WINDSOR CASTLE
Windsor Castle is an official residence of The Queen and the largest occupied castle in the world. A Royal home and fortress for over 900 years, the Castle remains a working palace today.
Visitors to Windsor Castle can walk around the State Apartments, extensive suites of rooms at the heart of the working palace. For part of the year visitors can also see the Semi State rooms, which are some of the most splendid interiors in the castle. They are furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection including paintings by Holbein, Rubens, Van Dyck and Lawrence, fine tapestries and porcelain, sculpture and armour.
Within Windsor Castle complex there are many additional attractions, including the Drawings Gallery, Queen Mary's dolls' house, and the fourteenth-century St. George's Chapel, the burial place of ten sovereigns and setting for many Royal weddings.
Windsor Castle has been named one of the Seven Wonders of Britain in a major survey by Yellow Pages, backed by the English Tourism Council. Sharing the limelight with attractions such as the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and Cornwall’s Eden Project, Windsor Castle is considered one of the ‘must see’ sites for visitors from Britain and overseas.
Although Windsor is dominated by the castle, the largest inhabited castle in the world, it is an interesting and picturesque town in its own right. The lower area by the river offers pleasant strolls, boat rides and gardens. The town area has some fine 17c and 18c buildings and pretty streets and shops. The Great Park area offers long majestic vistas of parkland.
The Windsor Farm Shop sells a range of products from the Royal farms and small local specialist suppliers.
